Who is God?
When you think about who God is, what comes to mind?
I was asked this question specifically back in college. A wise professor challenged me to deepen my religious convictions. Since then, my faith and belief in God have been forever changed.
I knew from a young age that I believed in God. If you had asked me this question early on in life though, I may have responded with a variety of answers. I have grown into such a place where I value and appreciate my relationship with God so much.
To be a bit vulnerable for a minute, when my professor asked me this question I didn’t know how to respond. I couldn’t believe it. Here I was, grew up active in the church my entire life, a Bible study attendee and leader, and a student at a Christian college. Why couldn’t I answer this question? I beat myself up.
As I sat mulling over this question my professor reminded me that there were no right or wrong answers. There wasn’t an expectation to give some elaborate response full of profound theology or eloquent words. It was about a relationship. How did I view the One who created me and knew every single intricate detail about my life, good and bad? It took some time but through prayer and petition, I was able to reach a point in my relationship where God became clear to me.
I often imagine my relationship with God as if we were sitting in those Cracker-Barrel-style rocking chairs. Rocking gently back and forth in front of a warm and cozy fireplace. The environment is calm and peaceful.
No expectations. No demands. Nowhere to be and nothing else more important to do.
Just thinking about it fills me with peace. I imagine while rocking God would challenge me. What and who am I living for? Why am I so anxious? What keeps me up at night? What about that situation can I not let go?
Questions to make me think. Questions to challenge me. The answers He already knows.
I’m thankful for God’s love for me. An imperfect person, making mistakes each and every day, striving to be positive and loving in a world that seeks to challenge us and fill us with unsteady energy. Even despite all of that, I am loved. And so are you.
Through the study of Scripture, I’m reminded that our God has several qualities. All of which should fill us with Hope and Peace.
He is self-existent. (Exodus 3:14)
He is eternal. (1 Timothy 1:17)
He is omnipresent. (Acts 17:27)
He is omniscient. (1 John 3:20)
He is omnipotent. (Genesis 17:1)
He is infinite. (Isaiah 9:6)
I challenge you to think about your relationship with God. It should be just that, a relationship. God is all-knowing, yet He is all-loving. God is Just, yet Sustainer. Rest in the fact today, that He cares about you. No matter what may be going on in your little corner of the world. Choose to sit and meet with Him today.
Psalm 46 - ESV
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
