Running on E

Do I have anyone out there who gets a little nervous when the gas gauge approaches “empty?”  Maybe you enjoy the thrill of testing the limits when your gas light comes on.  I’m one of those overly obsessive folks who prefer the gas tank to be at least half full, but definitely will fill up when it’s a quarter of a tank remaining.  Go ahead, it’s okay to laugh - I’m cool.

You see, my grandfather Pop always instilled in me to keep at least half a tank of gas in the car.  Yes, he normally told me this when I was commuting to college, but it’s always stayed with me.  He didn’t want me to end up getting stuck.  He didn’t know what was between the small town where I grew up and the small town where I went to school.  He wanted me to plan so I didn’t have to worry.  He didn’t want me running on empty.

Pop died almost ten years ago, and I still make sure I know how much gas is in my car.

The same goes for our life.  If we aren’t careful, we could be running on “E” quicker than we can blink.  Do you feel like life is busy?  Do you feel busy?  Are you worn out?  Brother or sister, let me tell you - it’s okay to say NO!  You probably want to be nice or you may be a super genuine person who just wants to be a helping hand.

Now, I’m not saying you just say no to all of life’s projects and no longer show up to work.  I challenge you to look at your to-do list.  What are your responsibilities?  What are your areas of service?  Do you have any time for yourself?

Friend, “you time” is necessary.  Don’t ever let anyone tell you that it isn’t.  You must have time to replenish your soul before you can be there to love and serve others.

We are commanded to rest.

Matthew 11:28-30 - The Message

28-30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Jesus himself rested.  It’s okay for you and me to rest too.  We can still do all the things, just as long as we take care of ourselves.  And check your gas tank - I don’t want you running out tomorrow, because you’ve probably got somewhere to be.
