What is Heaven like?

There’s no doubt we have all heard the songs. Verses about Heaven, what the streets of gold will be like, or what joy the reunification with loved ones will bring. Some warm our hearts while others leave us yearning for our friends and loved ones even more.

I long for Heaven.

I sometimes find myself, in times of difficulty or great fatigue, wishing for Jesus’ return to hurry up. I know deep inside that Heaven is going to be perfect. It’s promised for me in Scripture as a follower of Jesus.

Psalm 19:1 ESV

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

If the Heavens declare God’s glory, I imagine being drawn to my knees. Endless worship and a forever place of Holy Ground.

Like you, I’ve wondered if it will be an experience like Moses had. The glory of God concealed through a burning bush and places so Holy and amazing that he even removed his sandals to show respect for God’s Majestic Glory.

As followers of Jesus, we carry hope knowing that Heaven and eternal life are ours.

In the Gospel of John, we read these words.

John 14:1-4 ESV

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”

Jesus knew the purpose of the Cross was the Resurrection and hope of eternal life that was to follow. Heaven is the place God intended for us to be with Him. Not just for a short period, but forever.

Not only will Heaven be a perfect place that is promised to and for us, but Heaven will be a place where God makes us like Him.

Philippians 3:20 CSB

Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly wait for a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.

It's true, of course, as Scripture declares we will be like God. Perfect, whole, complete, and forever secure.

Endless amounts of worship and praise will fill the air. There will be no other source of importance. No needs or wants. No heartbreak or tears. No chaos or uncertainty.

Revelation 21:1-7 AMP

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away (vanished), and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, arrayed like a bride adorned for her husband; and then I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “See! The tabernacle of God is among men, and He will live among them, and they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will no longer be death; there will no longer be sorrow and anguish, or crying, or pain; for the former order of things has passed away.”

And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also, He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true [they are accurate, incorruptible, and trustworthy].” And He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the one who thirsts I will give [water] from the fountain of the water of life without cost.  He who overcomes [the world by adhering faithfully to Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior] will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.

This is why we were created. The Resurrection and eternal life promises us that God will never fail us. He never leaves us. Yes, we may have question upon question while we remain in the crossfire of sin in this life, but one day all will be made right. One day soon we will arise and live in peace and glory for the rest of time and forever.
